Land Rover Trip Report: Rocky Mountains with TuffAnt Simpson Wheels

Customer Max Thomason details a recent adventure to the Rocky Mountains with his Discovery 5 and TuffAnt Simpsons.

"A family friend has recently had some health issues and now…there is a finite amount of time left. Back in the 70s, this family friend had worked in the Rocky Mountains in the USA as a geologist and wished to go back. He always dreamed of an off road adventure and realized that there was no time like the present.

I have taken a number of Rovers to the Rocky Mountains in the past (a 1,900 mile / 3,100 km one way journey) and he asked me to take him out on a journey to the San Juan mountains in Colorado. The decision to make the trip a reality occured around March, so that gave me 4 months to put something together.

The plan was for us to meet in Silverton, CO on a Sunday evening, just in time for dinner and a beer, with us getting going bright and early and jump into the adventure. Our group consisted of our family friend in his new Ford Bronco 4 door, his friend in a Jeep JL Wrangler rubicon 4 door, and my Land Rover Discovery 5

With the other vehicles behind, the D5 took the lead for the week as we were able to complete the alpine loop, crossing over both Engineer and Cinnamon Pass with a stop over at American Basin.

Next, the D5 led our group on the Mineral Creek trail which had definitely gotten a lot more challenging from the last time I had driven on it. The final day we ran Black Bear pass which is one of the most beautiful trails mixed with a nail biting 2,000ft descent at the end.

We camped in a different location every night and enjoyed the amazing beauty of the San Juan Mountains. The Discovery 5 was the perfect platform for the long ride west, hit the trails, haul all the gear for our party, and get us back with no problems. I was happy to have the Tuffant 18” wheels paired with 255/70/18 BFG KO2s that offered great road manners and traction on the rocks. The adventure was one to be remembered and definitely the best for our family friend."
